“Only Africans can develop Africa.” There are many problems and challenges in Africa and only Africans with the help of surrounding countries can develop Africa. As years pass by many stereotypes about Africa and Africans begin to prosper, many of them on education, technology, and the corruption in the country. People around the world believe that all of Africa is undeveloped and uneducated; which is not the case. As shown in “Africa Straight Up”, Africa has well developed areas and is home to many of the new inventions being used worldwide. Before watching “Africa Straight Up” I too believed that Africa was an undeveloped country because of the way the media portrays the country. Even though it is a third-world country, it has many similarities of a first-world country. Education is the key to success, without education your options in life are limited. This has been the scenario in Africa for many years. It is has been very difficult for children in Africa to get educated because of the lack of schools and opportunity. They are now stereotyped as “All Africans are uneducated”. This is far from the truth; Africa has developed many leaders in the fields of business, science, and government. There are also, scholarships and funds going into the schooling for African children. One development that helped Africa’s education revolution was the all-girls school named Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy for Girls founded by Oprah Winfrey that was built in South Africa to help educate the girls of Africa. Huge controversy arose because of this school. People thought that she should have opened a school in the United States instead of in Africa. I personally think that Oprah did the right thing by opening this school; she is now giving the girls of Africa the opportunity to get an education and amount to something in life. Although, it would have been better if she opened a unisex school, she took a step and did something many other people wouldn’t have. The facts about technology in Africa can bring amazement to many, including myself.
