Despite the thirteenth amendment and emancipation proclamation freeing all enslaved african americans the end of the reconstruction of the south and the compromise of 1877 shattered all the temporary change that had occurred following the civil war, bring back “slavery with another name”.

Following the civil war drastic changes were made for the benefit of african americans including the thirteenth, fourteenth and fifteenth amendments as well as the Emancipation proclamation of 1863 and northern victory seen in documents one three and seven. Many changes would not start until they could be seen on television, in pictures and in books so the word could be spread. Document six details just that “Ida B Wells, pamphlet and lecture,1893” by talking about the “red book” a book in which detailed facts about lynchings and cruelty is shown through brutal pictures. The purpose was to show people that these things were happening and needed to be noticed and the intended audience was the people who didn't know what was going on. Like state in the beginning and throughout the documents there was little change in the lives of african americans between
