What is a ‘Stereotype?’
Stereotype is a generalization of a certain group of people, for example a certain gender, sex or race etc. and can over simplify an image or idea of a particular type of person.
A well-known stereotype amongst the world, targeting a certain race is “African Americans are good at Basketball”. Although, many NBA players are African-American, it does not indicate that ever man or woman of the same colour and race are good basketballers.

How and what character(s) in the sitcom are stereotyped?
Both the Asian mum and dad are portrayed in the sitcom by different stereotypes. A stereotype used to demonstrate the way Asians talk is ‘all Asians have an accent.’ This stereotype is conveyed in the sitcom and overall demonstrates the idea of how Asians speak. In the sitcom it is revealed that Jessica and Louis both have a thick Chinese accent. In the sitcom the stereotype, ‘Asians love a good bargain’ is demonstrated through Jessica. This stereotype is seen being used in the sitcom when, Jessica is shopping at a supermarket in Orlando and a flashback is given of Jessica whilst shopping at the Chinese market showing how she was screaming and yelling and bargaining.

Stereotypes can lead to aggressive actions towards another. Stereotyping causes a person to miss opportunities to build relationships with certain types of people It can hold back a certain type of individual from building a relationship with another individual or group as they may be different in some form. Stereotyping is a potential segue into discrimination. Stereotypes about class or race affect the shape of one’s identity. Stereotypes modify and replace the way one thinks. Stereotyping can stop someone from becoming and being recognised as who they really are or want to be. Stereotyping can cause harmful results, this may include, one not performing their best due to being stereotyped and also may stop someone from doing what they
