The time period following the Civil War was known as Reconstruction. With the end of the Civil War also came to the end to the institution of slavery. Even though the newly freed African Americans were supposed to be equal, they faced new challenges and were mistreated in the American South. African Americans were mistreated in several ways, including violence via lynchings and having rights they were given taken away. While African Americans were technically “free”, they continued to face abuse and discrimination in their post-slavery lives.
