Diagnostic Medical Sonographer- specializing in OB/GYN A diagnostic medical sonographer “uses high frequency sound waves (ultrasound) to produce dynamic visual images of organs, tissues, or blood flow inside the body” (“OOH”). Sonographers can specialize in many areas such as the abdomen, breast, cardiac, musculoskeletal, neurosonology, obstetrics/gynecology, or vascular technology. I will be discussing sonographers specializing in obstetrics and gynecology. A sonogram, or ultrasound is commonly used to see the fetus during pregnancy. Sonographers reveal the gender of the baby and update the women throughout her pregnancies. To become a sonographer, you can receive an associate or bachelor’s degree. Some training programs are only one year and others can be up to four years. Sonographers can train in “hospitals, vocational-technical institutions, colleges and universities or the military” (“DMS”). To get the professional credentials for sonography (RDMS: Registered Diagnostic Medical Sonographer), one must a national certification exam. According to Santiago, sonographers earn an average annual salary of $61,984, with an upside of up to $67,253. According to www.explorehealthcareers.org, sonographers earn $53,000 to $75,000 annually. The salaries depend on the work location and what area they specialize in. (“DMS”) The job outlook expectation for sonography is to grow 39 percent between 2012-2022, which is “much faster than the average for all occupations” (“OOH”). Sonographers can work in normal doctor’s offices, hospitals, or clinics. Sonographers have many duties. They must be comfortable speaking to others because they are mainly one on one with patients. Communication skills are very important in this career. They have to make sure their patients are comfortable and understand what procedures will be done. The sonographer prepares the diagnostic imaging equipment and must know how to operate the “highly sophisticated technological equipment.” (Santiago). They analyze the results and must know how to tell normal versus abnormal results. A sonographer must have a keen eye for detail, because “attention to detail is important” when the issue could be of a living healthy baby or one that is not
