Alas, Babylon written by Pat Frank is a is a classic novel set during the late 1900s in the US, where a nuclear war breaks out with the US against the Soviet Union, and the author captures the struggles the characters experience. In the novel, the war is based on a real war, called The Cold war, that occurred in China. The author tries to picture what it would be like if there was a sputnik launched onto The United State’s land. Based on real events that happened in Hiroshima, Pat Frank fantasizes and wrote down what would happen if the war was to happen in the US instead of in Hiroshima. Within the madness of the war, a couple still manage to be together and love each other more and more each day that passes, Randy and Lib. Towards the end of the book, right before Randy has to go off and take care of some business with some of his friends, Randy and Lib get married, which signifies that the novel will have a happy ending. In Alas, Babylon, Randy’s wedding show an underlying meaning in order to show the reader hope for the characters.

Towards the end of the novel, the baby being born is foreshadowing the chance humanity has of a new generation to come after the war. As soon as Dan Gunn, the town’s doctor, returned from his clinic, he told Randy, “ I have just delivered my first post-Day baby! A boy, about eight pounds, bright and healthy (Frank, 300)!” The baby boy was not Dan’s first delivery, but Dan delivered two other babies, but they did not make it, so Dan was astonished about beinf able to deliver a healthy baby boy .
