Albrecht-Kemper Museum: Museum Analysis

When I went and visited the Albrecht-Kemper Museum, I chose the painting, The Old Buchanan County Courthouse, in St. Joseph, Missouri. The artist of this painting is James Penney, an American, born in 1910 and died in 1982. The Old Buchanan County Courthouse, was not originally placed in the Albrecht-Kemper Museum, but was gives as a gift to the Albrecht-Kemper Museum by Mrs. James Penney in memory of James Penney. The characteristic of this painting in 1974-1976 was oil on a canvas. The painting represents what the Buchanan County Courthouse looked like in 1974-1976 and it was typical of the St. Joseph area at that time period. The front of the courthouse and its structure are emphasized in the painting. There are steps going up to the entrance of the courthouse and to the doric columns like in the Roman Pantheon and the Greek Parthenon. Some shapes that are in this painting are rectangle, squares, triangles, and cylinders. The tree in the painting is overlapping onto the courthouse and the painting is compacted because there is also another building in the painting that you can sort of see. The main emphasis of this painting is the courthouse and there are no shadows on the courthouse, so it is very visible to see. The bottoms of the columns have a little bit of a shadow to them like the sun was setting. This paining is very colorful and uses a lot of the cool color white to emphasize the courthouse. There are also some mixed, complimentary, and secondary colors in this painting. The sky and the tree both have texture and you can tell because of how the artist used different brushes and the way he used them. I believed this texture was implied because the artist wanted you to feel like the painting was
