Many real life problems are averted during class discussion, a proposition that usually a professor will avoid with all imperative cost is underage drinking. Eleven percent of consumed alcohol is from minors between the ages of twelve and twenty. Ninety percent of this consumed alcohol is from binge drinking, which is consuming an inordinate amount of alcohol in a short amount of time. In the novel, Looking for Alaska by John Green, the protagonist, Miles (Pudge), goes to a private school to find the “Great Perhaps”, while he is searching for this idealistic wonder, he meets Colonel, Takumi, and Alaska. It is easier to understand the situation because it is fiction, thus no lives were lost. Furthermore, because Alaska abruptly left, her friends did not know the intention of the crash, and assumed it was suicide. “But why wait until you’re six miles off campus to die?”(Pudge 206) As stated previously, her friends assumed it was suicide, and began to investigate what was the catalyst of this devastating event. The purpose of this occurrence was to imagine the possibilities that can result in underage drinking. This is important because parents are not usually going to talk about this topic at home, so it is necessary to discuss about it in school, which is supposed to be a safe haven for all students. “Enough with the fine’s already, Pudge. That’s ridiculous. I’m going to call Jake, and I’m going to write down everything he says, and then we’re going to sit down together and try and figure out what happened.”(Colonel 209) These lines show how much time and effort was spent by Pudge, Colonel, and Takumi to discover what caused her to go suicidal. This shows how much time can be wasted, because of alcohol. In the end she was suicidal, however, it was because the day before she died was her mother’s death anniversary, and she forgot, thus rushing to place flowers on the grave. Ignoring the fact, fiction means fake, many important issues are portrayed in these books, as a result the school board should not band fiction, because it teaches life lessons, like underage drinking. Long term side effects include the decrease of grey matter, grey matter impacts one’s self control consequently, may lead to epilepsy. Following the saying, “the wiser the older” kids will take guidance from anyone older than them. This may lead to bad decisions. Some adults, however, are not the best guidance counselors and will give the wrong advice. One life lesson given in Looking for Alaska, is underage drinking. Alaska’s short life was due to the factor of her excessive drinking before getting into the vehicle. With kids reading books about issues caused by drinking may decrease the staggering number of 88,000 deaths per year due to alcohol, which is ironically the fourth highest death case in the
