The story is about Jackson, a Spokane Indian who experiences self-conflict while homeless and living in the streets of Seattle, Washington. While the cause as to what really lead him to be homeless is unclear, one thing is clear and it’s the alcoholism of Jackson. Jackson flunked out of college and had been married multiple times with multiple kids but then went crazy. He makes it clear that he is not crazy as in having a mental problem so what kind of crazy does he mean? Conflict with oneself is what the story portrays and is seen in different scenarios. Alcoholism is a problem that is not always acknowledged and Jackson struggles to live with it in denial. One can only help themselves when they acknowledge the problem and deal with this psychological conflict within themselves. After talking to the owner, they came to an agreement that Jackson would get it back if he returns in twenty-four hours with nine hundred and seventy-four dollars plus the twenty that the owner gave him and the five dollars they earned earlier. Jackson and his friends left and went to the store and got drunk. Although his grandmother’s regalia meant a lot to him, his struggle with alcohol leads him to spend money instead of saving it. In his mind, he was short unless he had the full amount he needed so he continued to spend the money he also acquired selling newspapers.
