The American Founding Father and first Secretary of Treasury, Alexander Hamilton, was born out of wedlock on 1755 on the island of Nevis in the British West Indies, son of Rachel Faucet Lavien and James Hamilton, his entire background conducive to commercial pursuits. Hamilton grew up in a family characterized by financial hardship, bitter marital separations, public humiliations, parental death and abandonment. In modern terminology, psychologists refer to children that overcome personal/family hardships and excel despite great odds as “resilient children,” a term that perfectly characterizes Hamilton (Mitchell). Through Hamilton’s writings, historians can trace his family as far back as his grandparents – and ironically, a legacy of wealth
