Alfred In The Contender

In the novel, The Contender by Robert Lipsyte, Alfred Brooks is training to be a Contender and will learn a very important lesson in his life that is necessarily just about boxing. At one point of the novel, Alfred is training hard to be a contender. Alfred learns that in order to be a Contender he must put in the hard work to get to the “top”. “It's the climbing that makes the man. Getting to the top is an extra reward”(Pg.35). The message from this quote is that the climbing is the hard work and the top the reward. Anyone can enjoy getting to the top, but not just anyone can make the effort it takes a determined person for the challenge. At one point of the novel, Alfred is training really hard and comparing his progress to people like James. Alfred is told by many family and friends that he is crazy for wanting to be a contender. “You’ll do it for a week, maybe two. You’ll feel a little better physically, but all your friends, your family, will say you’re a fool. You’ll See other people smoking and drinking and staying out late, eating anything they want, and you'll start to think you're a fool, too. You’ll say to yourself, ‘All this Sacrifice, and I'll never even be a good fighter.’ And you’ll be right, nine times out of ten “(pg.34). This quote means that you shouldn’t listen to the people trying to bring you down because they are trying to play games with your mind. Alfred get hateful comments from mostly his family and friends. Alfred doesn’t let anything hateful into his head. In the song Titanium by David Guetta, has a very strong message that relates to what Donatelli says to Alfred about his training. “I’m criticized but all your bullets ricochet You shoot me down, but I get up”.
