At the beginning of the 20th century, sex was what everyone thought about, but also what everyone refused to speak about. America was very Victorian meaning she was very conservative. This all began to change with the works of Alfred Kinsey. Kinsey is known as the father of the sexual revolution in the United States. He grew up in very humble and religious roots and blindly followed his father’s guidance until a year into college. At this point in Kinsey’s life, he directly rebelled against his father, cutting his ties with him for good, and transferred to Bowdoin College to major in Biology. After graduation, he spent a few years researching gall wasp at the zoology department at the University of Indiana. Next, Kinsey began lecturing classes there. He was beloved by his students, which lead to his assuming the role as a role model and advisor. In his position of an advisor, many students asked questions about sex and sexual relationships. It was those issues and the overt interest in sex and human nature that began Kinsey’s lifetime devotion to exploring and learning of the true sexual identities of America. …show more content…
The class was so popular that even the largest auditorium at the university could not seat all who were interested in taking the class. While Kinsey constructed the course, he found himself spending many hours in the library, just to realize that there wasn’t any scientific information on the subject. At this point, he took it upon himself to build research and collect data on the hidden sex lives of the American people. His students became his research subject, but this quickly became a point of contention, leading to his retirement as a professor and the beginning of his full-time research career. His goal as a researcher was to paint an accurate portrait of human sex life by collecting 100,000 sex stories from all types of
