Gender roles and representation are the dictation of the types of behaviors which are generally considered acceptable, appropriate, based on their sex or sexuality, stereotypes, culture and there gender, femininity and masculinity. I Have chosen “Looking for Alibrandi” by Melina Marchetta, October 1992 and “I am Woman” by Helen Reddy, 1971. Over the duration of 1 term I have analyzed and explored two similar texts which has lead me to choose, describe and write my essay about the rebellion against gendered culture and natural stereotypes of their gender in both of the texts. However both texts describe and dictate a mixture of opinions from different sides of the story and similar sides, they both express opinions about gendered roles and how …show more content…
One female and one male. Different opinions are expressed and the different way they act and are shown in the book. The male side and point of view come from John Barton, Jacob Coote, Michael Andretti, cousin Robert and the history of her grandfather. They express a masculine influences and opinions. Majority of the examples express a different side of the story. A more blunt, rude and trying to get their opinion across faster and harder. This also happens because they are trying to prove their masculinity as strength . For an example “I don't want her’, he said flatly” said Michael Andretti. This point shows that they are more serious, different opinions in hard situations and different ways they react. All genders have specific roles that are portrayed, they are called stereotypes and in the text stereotypes of genders are exposed. The other side of the story is from the female's point of view. These views come from Josephine Alibrandi, her friends Sera, Lee and Anna, Christina, Nonna Katia and Ivy from school. This text is a song coming from a female's point of view. The lyrics express the struggle and the strength within her to succeed against normal stereotypes and odds that she had found herself in. “I am a woman, hear me roar” The impression given portrays a woman they may be struggling but is determined to change her life for the better. The artist tells a story of portrayal, of hurt and the strength to never let this happen to her again. The lyrics express her desire to succeed and change. This text is powerful and inspirational. “But look how much I gained”, she is not controlled by her culture, if anything the culture has driven her to break free of the stereotypes that her life has found her in so far. Another example is “You can bend but never break me” this shows the strength and determination of the female point of view in this text. Although the song is mainly about a female the lyrics show a hugely influenced male undertone. The words used by the Artist show that the female in this has been knocked down but is fighting to break free from the circumstance that she had found herself in. This is the culture she has found herself in but is determined to not be imprisoned by it etc not letting it rule her. Therefore the gender roles in this text and in the lyrics are different from the first text, this text shows more power from the female view but is still affected by the male
