The Alien and Sedition Acts were very controversial. Many Americans believed the Alien and Sedition Acts were unconstitutional. These acts were created by the Federalists Party to limit the power of the Republican Party. The Acts were passed by Congress in 1798 and signed by the President, John Adams, in preparation for the war with France. The Alien Acts included three bills that all supported the Federalist Party. The first act passed was the Naturalization Act. This act lengthened the time that resident aliens had to become a United States’ citizen from only five years to fourteen years. The next law passed was the Alien Enemies Act, which would determine whether a citizen from a foreign country was a threat to the United States.
