All People Are Living Histories-Who Is Why History Matters

As I began the History 101 course I was assigned two articles to read, summarize, and reflect on. Both articles contain people’s opinions on the importance of the study of History (educational study) and why it is essential for students to fully understand the content. In the first article All People Are Living Histories- Which is Why History Matters, the author, Penelope J. Corfield, gives her opinion on why she believes History is extremely relevant to everyone. In this article Corfield states, “The study of the past is essential for 'rooting' people in time.” Corfield goes on to explain why she believes people need to be rooted in time. She feels that in order to understand being a human, we have to fully understand our past roots to create a strong foundation for life. She continues by stating that History is “inescapable” and understanding History helps people grasp the concept of time and their purpose in this time. Corfield believes that History allows an understanding of life that helps people continue to grow and change by understanding what made past species thrive and what made them die off. …show more content…
On one hand I agree with Corfield’s beliefs stated in this article because I do believe that it is important to understand how people came to be and why, in order to understand time. I also agree with her opinion that we should study History to interpret how certain species flourished and how some became extinct so that we don’t repeat history. On the other hand I don’t agree with Corfield’s belief that we have to understand History in order to understand our purpose in this time and what being human is about.
