Erich Maria Remarque uses a wide variety of literary devices to connect with the readers and put them in the war setting to understand the horrors of war. The horrors of war in All Quiet on the Western Front are exemplified through the imagery, pathetic fallacy, and symbolism used by Remarque. Firstly, the use of imagery is shown throughout the novel as to create a vivid picture of war into the minds of the audience. In one scene, Paul Baumer sees a man hanging with “his hands and the stumps of his arms, shot off” and only his torso remaining (Remarque 113). The audience can see and feel what Paul does when witnessing such a gruesome part of the horrors of what war can bring. Pathetic fallacy uses the weather and setting to describe the events
