In All Quiet on the Western Front, the author, Erich Remarque uses an intentionally ironic statement about the cruelty of using horses in wartime to depict the true nature of war. When one of the soldiers, Detering exclaims “I tell you it is the vilest baseness to use horses in war”(64), a clear connection is drawn between man and beast. The soldiers’ reaction toward the deaths of horses is greater than that of the men, even though both parties are dying in a war that they didn’t start. This irony is no accident, but effectively displays Remarque’s depiction of the manipulative nature of wars. In addition, another soldier, Kropp declares that the disputers should just “have it out with themselves”(41), bringing to light the complete unfairness
