Growing up on the Westside of Chicago taught me that zeal, tenacity and drive were invaluable skills needed to prosper as an African American woman. My family has always believed in the education system and throughout my life emphasized its importance. Although it was difficult dealing with my father’s substance abuse and my younger brother’s learning disability, I realized that education is the key to a successful future. The great Ralph Blum once said, “nothing is predestined: The obstacles of your past can become the gateways that lead to new beginnings.” I have learned lessons and overcome many obstacles. Based on my desire to grow within the medical field, I became affiliated with Health Occupations Students of America (HOSA). This organization provided me with the opportunity to compete against other medical students within the Chicago Public School (CPS) Medical program as well as other students throughout the State of Illinois. During this past year, I placed in the second round for Forensic Science and Medical Photography. Not making it to the nationals was a disappointment, but I still continue to push myself to improve my skills.
I also volunteer at the Jesse Brown Veterans Administration Medical Center working in various departments. My responsibilities include helping transport non-ambulatory patients using wheelchairs, stretchers and hospital beds and assisting the receptionist with front office work. During the summer, I worked at CVS Pharmacy as a Pharmacy Technician. This was a wonderful opportunity because I was able to interact with different patients and help them. I assisted the staff pharmacist with filling prescriptions, ensuring accuracy and efficiency. In addition, I provided friendly customer service to the
