Melinda has truly been through moments of triumph and heartbreak, but nothing could prepare her for what happened. Laurie Halse Anderson's takes the emotion Melinda felt and applies in different ways using allusion. Each illusion can be put into different categories. Also, the authors examples of allusion can be related to some archetypal symbols. Characters in allusion can share similar traits to characters in the story. Each allusion has a deeper meaning that compares to the book, “Speak”.

To start, in the book, Speak, and the author uses illusions that can be categorized groups.The four types of allusions found and speak are literary, historical, pop culture and artist/art. An example of a literary allusion is “Dracula”. This book was about a vampire on the search for blood. Also, a historical example would be “The Suffragettes”. These were women fighting for the right to vote in the late 19 century. Furthermore, in an example of pop-culture allusion would be when the author refers to Glenn Close. Glenn Close was the name of the character in the scandalous movie “Fatal Attraction”. Lastly do you have to use this artist and art allusions. And example would be Picasso. Picasso was an artist in the early to mid-1900s who use cubism to shape his art.

They can relate because blood can represent life itself and divine life. Dracula takes the lives of women to fuel his divine desire for blood. Another example would the book, “Alice in Wonderland”. Allison Wonderland can relate to the cave symbol. In that case, the rabbit hole and cave are mirror images of each other. The cave can represent entering the womb of Mother Earth. Allison Wonderland enters the rabbit hole and becomes one with her
