In the film, Almost Famous, directed by Cameron Crowe, we view everything in William’s point of view. From the innocence of his childhood to life on the road, William’s hero's journey revolves around Still Waters leader Russell and the infamous Penny Lane. The use of lighting, camera angles and costumes show William's point of view about Russell and Penny. Cameron Crowe uses these techniques within his film to help the audience follow alongside Williams journey as he realises that not everyone is what you expected. This lead William to his first visit to Penny, The first shot of Penny, was presented with a glow around her. The use of lighting surrounding Penny was really bright giving a feel that she is an angel. With the big coat she wore and use of makeup making her face look soft and innocent, it looked almost as if it was pulled out of a fairytale to be real.This reflects William’s point of view of Penny as she is like none other. As Almost Famous progress we see that Penny is beginning to change in William's view and the Penny Lane persona deteriorates but William still sees Penny as an angel. In the scene ‘Wake up, Penny!’ it reveals Williams new point of view of Penny and that she is naive. When Penny “was sold to Humble Pie for a case of beer” she begins to feel more as an object more than a being but still holds a front and smiles while asking “what kind of beer?” The lighting used in this scene is natural sunlight, and the costume as casual and simple of white top and jeans presented Penny in William’s idea is more realistic and relaxed than how she was before in the beginning of the
