Due to the fact that I only joined the Alpha Phi sorority a few weeks ago, I have not been immersed in the Greek life community as much as I would’ve been if I was a member at the beginning of the semester. However, I have been exposed to some of the values of the fraternal experience at the University of South Dakota within these past few weeks. With the University’s Founder’s Day coming around the corner, it’s important to acknowledge the history of Greek life. They’ve always had a large presence on campus, whether it’s tabling in the Muenster University Center or fundraising outside the library. The chapter has the opportunity to receive leadership training from Alpha Phi International. They also have biennial conventions and regional conferences annually. Anyone can attend these sessions, as they help build the crucial leadership skills needed for the real world. Every initiated member also has the opportunity to be on the chapter’s executive board, where they have a number of positions that come with their individual responsibilities. There are many ways to build strong bonds with your sisters. Having an Alpha Phi family seems very beneficial for your personal and collegiate growth, mainly because your big serves as a type of role model throughout the whole process. I have not gotten a big myself yet since I’m such a new member, but I should be getting one before the school year is over and I’m already very excited to gain that experience! There are also sisterhood events within the sorority which gets everyone to spend more time together. There are also socials that Alpha Phi has with other fraternities or sororities at the University of South Dakota which are supposed to connect the girls in their own sorority as well as the other members in the greek community. Once you’re a member of Alpha Phi, you are a member for life. This is why networking with your sisters now is so important, you never know what will happen in the future. There are also alumnae events that can help you reconnect with your sisters if you’ve been graduated for awhile and feel as if you’ve lost touch with the other
