Altruistic Theories: Article Analysis

These articles were about altruism and if someone could truly be altruistic. They talked about personal stories, one was about the authors mother helping at the food pantry on Christmas Eve, instead of sitting at home with friends and family. Another, was about a guy who had an epileptic seizure and fell onto the train tracks and a witness jumped in to save him but did not have time to get him out, so he got on top of him and pushed him into the drainage ditch. Both coming out unharmed.
The first article talked about different theories and how they were related to or were about altruism. One was called kin selection, which states altruistic genes would be more likely to survive through generations because their kin would pass them on. I believe E.O. Wilson, the man who came up with this theory later denounced his own support of kin selection, because it was found out that altruism extends to all social groups and not just family. The article also talked about the evolutionary aspects of altruism and how we have needed to rely on others to survive over generations.

I work at Noodles and Company and one day this couple with two kids (a baby and a toddler) came in and ordered food to go. The mom was carrying the baby and the dad was holding the toddler, and I remember they had two bags of food and two drinks. This was a lot to carry for them, so they were going to take some of it to the car and come back for the rest. Instead, I told them I would carry it out to their car for them so they would not have to come back. They were very appreciative and told me how they were visiting from Texas and had to come to Noodles and Company, since they did not have one there. My motivation was just to help them, they were a very nice couple. The couple being so appreciative of my small action made me feel good about helping
