In between the years 1861 and 1865, the United States of America was divided into two seperate nations, the Confederate and the Union.The short story, “An Occurence at Owl Creek Bridge”, by Ambrose Bierce, was set during this event. Bierce utilizes imagery as well as plot elements to create a stronger sense of suspense and eerieness. Bierce’s vision of imagery throughout the story creates a more suspenseful thought process for the reader to imagine. Even in the final moments of suspected death Peyton, the man being hung, was still in thought as,“He closed his eyes in order to fix his last thoughts upon his wife and children”(Bierce I).
