Amelia Earhart Mystery Did Amelia Earhart really disappear into the Pacific Ocean? To this day Amelia Earhart going missing is still a mystery. Many theories have been released ever since 1937 about what people think really happened to her. The mystery around Amelia Earhart can be summed up in two theories: Earhart landed safely on Gardner Island, but died before she could be rescued and Earhart’s flight was an elaborate scheme to spy on the Japanese, who captured her after she crashed. While Earhart’s last plane disappearing is no secret, the mystery surrounding her death has been twisted and turned by theorists for many many years. Although opinions vary, there are a few theories that most people agree with: Earhart missed her intended refueling site, but spotted Gardner Island. Specifically; Helena Katz, author of Downed, claims that “After 1945, there were stories that she had been on a secret spying mission for the United States that the Japanese had captured and executed her (Katz 8). This claim is significant because it shows that Earhart possibly could have been captured by the Japanese for being an elaborate spy for the United States. Also David Wayne states that, “Japanese capture Earhart, forcing her to take the airwaves as the dreaded “Tokyo Rose”. This is important because the Japanese could have had something to do with the disappearance of Earhart. This evidence strongly contradicts the Gardner Island theory. Some people don’t believe this theory due to the simple fact that “Earhart never got anywhere close to Japan”. But no one for sure knows that.
