From 1750- 1820 there were many changes and revolutions throughout the globe. It can be argued that the most revolutionary of them all were the American, French, and Haitian Revolutions. All three of these revolutions used enlightenment principles and established a constitutional monarchy within their societies. It can also be argued that the Haitian Revolution was the most revolutionary of them all. Beginning in 1791, by 1803 the Haitians had not only abolished slavery, but also the French control over the colony. This revolution was the most successful slave rebellion against a colonial power to ever occur in history. By 1803 the Haitians had overcome the French and gained power over their own country. The Haitians used the concept of enlightenment to show the Europeans how incorrectly they had used their own philosophies when applying them to society. Unlike the French and American, the Haitians were fighting an internal and external force at the same time; but still managed to come out on top and accomplish their goal. The Haitian Revolution did not only affect its own territory. When the Haitians finally abolished slavery, the slave owners in the United States were terrified of a slave rebellion in their land as well. Also- the Haitian Revolution gave rise to the expansion of the United States. Although all three utilized enlightenment principles and established a constitutional republic, the Haitians accomplished the most significant slave rebellion against a colony in all of history. Eventually, the Haitians even regained control of their territory by defeating the French. The French Revolution can be argued as the most revolutionary, but all of it’s accomplishments were undone by Napoleon when he waged war with territories that his army was not capable of conquering. This gave rise to the Congress of Vienna that reset the constitutional monarchy of France and redrew the lines of Europe to match what they looked like before Napoleon’s conquest, causing all revolutionary ideals to be erased. Likewise, many could argue that the American Revolution was the most successful, but it didn’t accomplish goals as significant as the Haitians did. In the end, the Haitian Revolution was the most revolutionary because of it’s accomplishments that had never before been seen in history and because of the effects it had on the rest of the world as well. Without the Haitian Revolution, it is very possible that America would not be the slave free nation that we are
