The school was opened in 1955 as American River Junior College, on the site of the old Grant Technical College. It moved to its present area in 1958, involving eight recently assembled office buildings and the first Cameron farm house. In 1965 the school turned into a part of the Los Rios Community College District and got to be American River College.
