It has been almost five years since the book American Sniper was published. In these five years, the concept of what veterans and active duty soldiers have to go through both on the battlefield and when they return home has had a great deal of light shed upon it. A movie was made based on the life of the American hero Chris Kyle and the autobiography he wrote. This movie accurately displayed to millions of viewers what it is like for a special forces soldiers to come home from a bloody and mentally scarring warzone. The PTSD and stress that accompanies the mind of someone coming home from a world of chaos can cause soldiers to react to seemingly normal occurrences like a threat. Chris Kyle managed to use his PTSD experience and treat it by helping veterans in need. Chris would spend time working with people who were disabled mentally and physically from the war. Often times he would go and give them tips on shooting since he was such a good shot himself. Working with these people brought a feeling of joy and purpose to Chris Kyle and his relationship with his family after years of being absent to war caused separation from them. They had taken a young man by the name of Eddie Ray Routh out to shoot when he had a mental lapse and shot both men. This had a rippling effect on America as well as his home state of Texas. The book based on his life had been out for only a year and the movie had yet to be released. The movie had a much stronger portrayal of the truly devastating effects that war can have on a soldier’s mind after they return home. Normal noises in everyday life can trigger flashbacks and threaten the soldiers that are home between tours serving their country. Chris made it his goal to help people dealing with these problems by taking them shooting and talking to them, while also treating his own PTSD
