Amores Perros, is a movie directed by Alejandro González Iñárritu, and it is divided into three stories that intersect because of a car accident that involves the main characters: Octavio, Suzana and el Chivo. The three stories are divided into three parts, which are: Octavio and Susana, Daniel and Valeria, and El Chivo and Maru. Octavio is a young man who wants to escape from Mexico City with Susana, his brother’s wife. Octavio ends up using his dog Cofi in dog fights in order to get the money to leave. These dog fights eventually get him into a situation that causes him to crash another car. Lastly, we follow el Chivo, an ex-communist guerrillero, that after expending years in prison, makes a living killing people for money. El Chivo arrives at the place the accident took place and there he finds Cofi, Octavio’s dog, and takes it to his home. El Chivo is hired by a businessman to kill his half-brother, and while trying to do this task, he has to deal with forgiving himself for leaving his daughter and wife to join the guerrilla. The significance of the title, Amores Perros or Love’s a Bitch, is that it talks about a cruel love; a love that is capable to make us do irrational things. The story involves the couples Octavio and Susana, and Daniel and Valeria. And it talks about the different stages of love. The first one being the chase or the pursue of the relationship, like Octavio constantly tried to do because he was in love with Susana. The second one being the stage where things fall off because this kind of love is idealized; the wants and needs are not clear. We can see that when Daniel leaves his wife and after moving in with Valeria, he realizes that what he thought he wanted wasn’t exactly what he needed.
