Amores Perros directed by Alejandro González Iñárritu is a thriller that depicts contemporary urban life in Mexico. The film connects three different people with drastically different lifestyles together through a single event- a severe, fast paced car collision. The film covers the themes of violence, the love for dogs and inequality. The three main characters Octavio, El Chivo and Valeria are ranked very differently in terms of society. Valeria is an upper class, successful supermodel. Octavio is placed within the working class part of society; using underground dog fighting as a way of providing an income for his family. Finally El Chivo is a lower class citizen with his only real source of income is working as a hitman. Although the divide is very obvious, the underlying theme of compassion between the characters own dog is very obvious. The dogs are used in very different ways between the characters. Valeria uses her dog Richie almost as an accessory, Octavio uses his dog Cofi as a source of income and El Chivo uses his many dogs as companions and his source of company.
