Every society is characterized by its social change. However, the direction of the social change, its nature and its direction are affected by several factors. The youth plays a big role in the social change in today’s society. Therefore, any issue affecting the youth also affect the social change either in a positive manner or negative. The main factors that are affecting the youth include the social-economics factors and the cultural factors. Paul Krugman and Raymond Carver cover these factors in their articles “Confronting Inequality” and “What We Talk about When We Talk about Love” respectively. Krugman provides the main effects of such inequality and also provides some solutions to the problem. In his solution, he believes that people could be made to live an equal life if the government decides to provide grants and scholarships to the less privileged, (Krugman, 2). On the other hand “What We Talk about When We Talk about Love” is all about love and other issues such as drugs and alcohol. There are four characters that are married and who are talking about love as one of them explains a lot about her ex-husband. The characters are creating a huge web as they were all married but ended up divorcing and therefore they know a lot about love. He talks about love all along stating its importance and what it really is. In the modern world, every youth is affected by the issue of love. It boosts someone’s morale in handling things and thus may lead to a positive change in the social change. Drugs and alcohol, being one of the most common factors affecting the youth, is also seen in ‘What we mean when we talk about love’. The effect of alcohol can be seen in the way the characters change even in their way of talking as they continue drinking, (Raymond, 45). It is obvious that alcohol does no good to anyone.
