In life, people learn many lessons. This also happens in literature. In the novel Don’t Look Behind You by Lois Duncan, April learns a valuable lesson that families should always stick together. Duncan illustrates this theme throughout the novel. In the beginning, April lives in a small town in Virginia; she has a wonderful life, family, and boyfriend. She even has a shot at the state tennis championship. That all takes a bad turn when her father gets into trouble and their family has to disappear into the Federal Witness Security Program to save their lives, which she doesn't understand at first. Throughout this experience, April discovers what is really important in life ; she understands the importance of family.

When April, an eleventh grader, first found out her family had to be in this program, there were a multitude of emotions swirling around in her head. The details make the reader feel like she was the most shocked and upset in the entire family. April’s mother, Ms.Corrigan, says, “It doesn’t make any difference what we call ourselves. We’re still the same people we always were, isn’t that right kids?”(Duncan 85). This quote is important because even though they had to go into a witness protection program, in their hearts they know that they are together. Her mother said this because she believes they even though they are going through a hard time, they should still know that they are family. Nothing should come in between their bond. As the novel goes on, the family still faces many challenges, but they know how to come together. When she first found out the bad news, she sent a note to her boyfriend, But the man who were after them found out. The text states, “Things change, and life goes on, and we roll with the punches.” This quote explains to the reader that with all the changes they have been through they know at the end of the day they are
