Emily Dickinson's structure contributes to the fact that we're unprepared for death, by describing throughout the poem how Death was giving her a ride to these different places before reaching her destination to death. For example, the author states, " We passed the School, where Children strove at Recess – in the Ring." Dickinson paints a little scene of what they were riding by. They see children playing in the schoolyard during recess. Additionally it says in the poem, "We passed the Fields of Gazing Grain – We passed the Setting Sun." This description shows the scene she's riding through, the setting sun symbolizes the end of the day. Furthermore, lines 17 and 18 indicate, "We paused before a House that seemed, a Swelling of the Ground."
