On November 5th, 2015, Henderson high school’s talented students performed An Evening of Science Fiction Adapted for the Stage. This play was a collection of short stories; it included The Rocket by Ray Bradbury, The Veldt by Ray Bradbury, Harrison Bergeron by Kurt Vonnegut, and Zero Hour by Ray Bradbury. Before the production began, the audience was warned that three of the four stories would have a darker theme. This being true, these themes captured the attention of the audience for the entire duration of the short stories. The actors in each of the short stories all performed exceptionally. They held their audiences attention with the display of a spectrum of emotions and instances of humor. However, there were a few actors that stood out in their particular short story. Not only did they convey their emotions to the audience, they became the person they were portraying. In Zero Hour by Ray Bradbury, actress Ellie Antonucci delineated the character Mink. She spoke in a child-like voice and precisely imitated the behaviors of a child. Yes, the actors are one of the most crucial components of a play. Yet, without the sets, costumes, and many other aspects, the performance may not seize the interest of the audience. The costumes and make up in each story matched the time period, time of day, and settings. Furthermore, even though the characters did not have microphones, the projections of their voice were well done and audible to the audience members that were in the back of the auditorium. In truth, the sets of some of the short stories, could have been improved. For instance, in The Veldt, the backgrounds that they projected in the nursery were adequate. Even though, they illustrated what was in the nursery, the projection only took up a portion of the background
