Bierce was one of the first writers to use stream of consciousness in his story called “An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge”. His use of stream of consciousness shows the thoughts of Peyton Farquhar’s thoughts and feelings throughout the story. Many examples can be seen throughout.
One example would be around the middle of the story, when Peyton Farquhar is about to be hanged; While he reminisces about his family, he begins hearing his watch ticking extremely loud and likens the sound to a hammer striking an anvil. Another example of stream of consciousness is when Farquhar is dropped from the bridge and hanged. He begins hallucinating about his escape to freedom.
