An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge “An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge,” written by Ambrose Bierce. Peyton Farquhar is the main character who is sentenced to be hanged for tampering the bridge. Farquhar begins to dream about getting back to his family and escaping being hanged. In “An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge, Ambrose Bierce uses suspense to show how Farquhar has flashbacks of seeing his family and uses suspense by Peyton’s feelings. Bierce uses irony throughout the story, including escaping the water by getting out of the hemp which was what Farquhar was being hanged with and got untangled to escape the water. After Farquhar got untangled, soldiers were shooting at him but Bierce used irony to show how Farquhar ran from the soldiers
