The word “American” does not simply mean one who lives in America, there is a untold true story of many who truly define an American. Soldiers sacrificing themselves on the battlefield, patriotism and pride for their country unmatched by anyone. Children and adults standing hand by hand no matter what color or religious belief their fingers are intertwined with. Veterans and citizens kneeled down at the Vietnam Memorial honoring those lost at battle. Our Statue of LIberty unifying each and every person to the promise of freedom and protection of rights. Our flag bold and strong polluted by all, pledging our allegiance to the country that allows our voices to be heard. The story behind this image, creates a deeper relevant impact on what the viewer sees. This image was captured directly after the bloodiest Marine Corps battle in WW2, that to this day has the highest death toll of any marine battle. Many lives were lost, but through the efforts of our men, we prevailed and gained a victory for America. The photo is displayed in black in white, and instantly the viewer is transported into a scene placed on a hill after a bloody battle. Rubble and destruction surround the image, and four marine men are focused on. These marines are featured on the hill, all working together to raise an American flag amongst the chaos below them. The marines stand out as a focal point in the image because of the determination and honor shining in their eyes as they are lifting the flag. Through the sadness and grief of these four marines after losing their brothers in battle, these true hero's remain strong and continue to fight to raise the flag in honor and love of those who were lost in battle and to signify what they were fighting for:our freedom. These men define what it means to be an American through their pride and honor of our country, they fought so that all can have a voice in our world, and gave an example to all Americans to never stop fighting for what we believe in. The most impactful part of this photo was that it was taken at a time of grief and sorrow, but by these men giving our soldiers and country dignity, this moment was transformed into an image of hope and victory, our proud flag rising high above the battle that tried to bring us
