The poems Alone by Maya Angelou and The Ballad of the Landlord by Langston Hughes use many similar and different techniques to help develop the theme. In Alone the theme is to never give up and in The Ballad of the Landlord is to fight for what you believe in. Alone is about a woman that is very poor and is never going to give up to find a home and she can’t make it alone. Also, The Ballad of the Landlord is about an African American man that fights for his rights and then gets put into jail. Angelou and Hughes use many similar techniques to help develop the theme. They both use repetition to help develop the theme. In Alone, Angelou repeatedly says “No, nobody can make it here alone. When she keeps on repeating it, she is showing that she really needs someone to help and she will never give up until she finds someone and a home. …show more content…
Also, in The Ballad of the Landlord, Hughes uses a lot of repetition to show how much the landlord took advantage of him. He says “Ten Bucks you say is due” and “landlord, landlord” to show that he is not going to put up with it and he is going to fight for his rights. Repetition helps Hughes develop his theme by showing us that no matter what, he is going to fight for what he believes in. Another similarity that both Angelou and Hughes use is symbolism. In Alone, Angelou says “to cure their hearts of stone” meaning that some people are very rich and are not kind- to lend people money in need just like the character in Alone.
