Daniela Deane uses an abundance of strategies in her essay, The Little Emperors. Therefore, it is important that analysts address each of Deane’s strategies in order to identify and understand Dean’s purpose of her argument.
1.Deane has the intent to persuade an American audience. I’ve come to this conclusion because the article was published in the Los Angeles Times- a famous American news service. The Americans who read the article are likely surprised or shocked at what they read, because they are likely to have not been aware of China’s policy.
2.In addition her appeal to an American audience, Deane takes a position in the argument. Not only does Deane explicitly state her claim, she also provides a lot of stories. For instance, Deane describes a scenario where a teenager is preoccupied with a video game and how his mother insists on feeding the teenager grapes while he plays his game. And, before the mother can leave the room, she has to throw away the grape seeds, at her son’s command. Additionally, Deane discusses an interview with “Li”, a woman who had three abortions. In her interview, Li states that she had to have three abortions after her first child was born because she did not want to get fired from her job and that she was not taking birth control, which was mandated by the
