“Don’t Look Now” is a short story written by Daphne du Maurier; it first published in 1970. This short story is sometimes referred to as a novella, because of the length of the story. According to Smith, “The story was made into a suspense movie a few years after it was published, and has remained one of du Maurier’s best-known tales.” The story revolves around mystery, horror, along with a bit of humorous sarcasm. It is a tale involving a British couple vacationing in Venice to escape the pain of their daughter’s recent death. The couple encounters two sisters at a café. Cengage mentions, “The story is, at its core, a tale about seeing and talking with the dead, as well as about psychic visions and premonitions.” John and Laura lost their daughter, they randomly meet up with the blind sister. The blind sister has visons of the dead child, and can hear the child warning her father. The blind sister has not always been blind, but being blind brought her to discover she could see into another world. On top of discovering she could see into another world, the sisters start to keep a diary of all their supernatural happenings. Throughout the story, John also sees Laura with the two sister, even though Laura was not in Venice. The sisters explain to John that he was probably having a vision, and he still does not believe in such thing. By the time the story comes to its violent ending, John realizes too late his visons where a warning.
“Don’t look Now” also revolves around horror brought on by fear and shock. Laura is in shock when the blind sister tells her, she is sad because of the death of her daughter. This is something the blind sister did not know. John and Laura are sock when they randomly run into the two sisters, not just once, but more than twice. When John and Laura start to feel shocked about these occurrences, they also start to feel fear. The story starts out with a death and ends with a death. First the death of their daughter, the main reason John and Laura go to Venice. While in Venice, trying to find peace and closure to their tragedy, they encounter another tragedy. Even though John and Laura where warned by the blind twin sister, John refused to believe. John refused to take the warning from his daughter and neglected to believe his wife Laura. John had plenty of warnings beforehand. He decides to ignore his wife’s plea to leave Venice. At the end John dies and leaves Laura to grief not only their daughter’s death, but also, his death.
This story, “Don’t Look Now” is full of horror, suspense, romance, relationship along with humor and sarcasm with a heartbreaking ending. It is inevitable for things not to go wrong throughout the story. There is a feeling of sadness right from the beginning. The story compresses all these elements to one. The reader can definitely get the feeling of what is happening, while also becoming engages with what is happening. We can definitely say this story leaves the reader with a mix of found emotions and this exactly what a great must
