The idea that we cannot know our own mental states or whether we even have a mind is called internal world. When Raskolnikov committed the crimes, he was not in the right state of mind. Obviously, if he was in the right mind, he would not have killed the pawnbroker. Raskonikvo’s mental well-being quickly worsens after the murder he committed. However, some may say he has a mental illness because he thinks people all around him fears him and is out to get him. For example, Razumihin says to Raskolnikvo “You are delirious you know!” and Raskolnikov’s response is a bold “No I am not!
