In the book Nickel and Dimed Ehrenreich explains her family's work history early in the text. Ehrenreich states "In my own family, low wage way of life had never been many degrees of separation away; it was close enough, in any case, to make me treasure the glorious autonomous, if not always well paid, writing life"(Ehrenreich 2). She shows us that she does not want to be like the rest of her family members that have either worked labor intense jobs or one low wage job after another. Ehrenreich expresses that it is a privilege to be able to sit at a desk, but also a duty that she owes to all those people in her life that wanted to say more yet no one would listen (Ehrenreich 2).
