In Eric Walter’s award winning novel, We All Fall Down, a 9th grader named Will Fuller spends the day at his father’s workplace, the World Trade Center, where he experiences an event that continues to change the world. The story begins in a history class where we are introduced to the main character Will. Will is a typical young teenage boy who is stubborn but is also very kind-hearted. We also see James, Will’s best friend. Tomorrow, Will has to spend the day with his father at his workplace, which he is not too excited about (17). This key moment in the plot is the start of the events that are yet to take place. Will looked out the window and saw what seems to be paper falling from the sky (64). He also heard screams coming from all directions. In this moment of time, he still does not know what had just happened, which builds up a tense emotion from both Will and the reader. While everyone wanted to keep working, Will’s father took the initiative and ordered everyone to evacuate the building. Throughout the whole story, Will believes that his father thinks that his work is more important than him. When Will and his father are speaking in the stairwell about what would happen if Will was not there, Will learns something about their relationship that he never thought about before. Will has always knew that is father at least cared for him, but to hear the words out loud was totally mind blowing for him, especially in a time of crisis. This relates back to the main point of his father being the most important person in his life. Throughout Will’s whole childhood, Will never had the chance to bond with his father. There was never a point in the story until now where Will’s father expressed his true feelings about Will, and now he finally did.
