About 42 years ago there was a civil war between the Cambodian government and an organization called the Khmer Rouge. On April 17, 1975 the Khmer Rouge went into the city of Phnom Penh to celebrate that the war was over, little did the people know that the next time they saw those soldiers they would be forcing them out of there homes. The Khmer Rouge told all of the people in Phnom Penh that the United States was going to bomb the town, so everyone was told that they had to leave but they could come back in a couple of days. There were many people that were effected by this, but one little girl shared he story of the day all of there lives changed. Loung Ung and her family were one of the families that were effected. They were a higher class family because their father was a government official. When the Khmer Rouge won the war Pa knew that he would have to hide his identity from them or his whole family would be in trouble with the new government. In the memoir, First They Killed My Father by Loung Ung, Ung explores how relationships are important in her journey in order to demonstrate how her relationship with her Pa makes her committed to survive. Knowing that her father was killed definitely helped her strive to survive because she wanted to see the people suffer, she never wanted to forget the things they did together, and while he was alive he provided for them. If something like this happened today, people that would be killed would have an effect on one of the significant others. How someone interprets that death is up to
