The piece that I chose for this week’s discussion is “The Love Embrace of the Universe” by Frida Kahlo, created in Mexico 1949. Frida suffered an accident that impeded her from having children of her own. As the years went on Frida took a motherly role into her relationship with her husband which made it easier to indulge his mischief. In this piece Frida is the earth mother nurturing the baby she could never had, her Dieguito. In this piece Frida is inspired by ancient Mexican mythology of the day and night which permeate each other, the moon and the sun, life and death, and Mother Nature.She also reflects her culture by wearing a dress that represents the native clothes of Mexico.
