Dick Bass, a millionaire from Texas remains to be the oldest person to have ever climbed Mount Everest. Krakauer describes how Bass' achievement had a tremendous influence on the modern popularity and business of commercial guided tours. He also explains his concern that Bass inspired amateur climbers with limited experience to ascend Mount Everest with one of the high priced guided tours.
