The title of the story is Invisible Man and the author is Ralph Ellison. The physical setting of the book is in “The American South”/ New York and the temporal setting is in the 1930s. In the Invisible Man the author manipulates the time in the story by not giving any distinct time or day, but tells you the period of time by the way he describes the setting. The setting is critical to the story because the book talks about the racial tension that happened in the South and how many whites were not accepting of blacks and their way of living. The tone of the mood to me is psychological; the book really makes you think of why the characters were so offended with talking about race and if it was truly there opinion on certain things or if they were raised to think that. The invisible man was very intelligent but he constantly let the hurtful word of others bring him down. Invisible man was a complex character, he’s state of mind constantly changed once he started to have faith and respect himself. There are four antagonists in the story which was Dr. Beldose, Brother Jack, Mr. Norton, and the Exhorter. All four of the characters continued terrorize the invisible man throughout the story. The motive of the antagonists was to lower the self esteem of the invisible man and constantly made him question his intelligence.
