Today in our society there are many people who believe that they have to conform to norms of language, gender and culture. Everyone believes in a proper way to act or do something, many times it's very different for each individual person. In “Politeness Is Her Powerlessness” by Deborah Tannen, and “Campus Sex… With a Syllabus” by Jessica Bennettjan, both articles tend to explain how our society bases lots of things from these norms, how nowadays people tend to comply with the norms of language, and gender. For instance women being treated like the minority, which is what both authors incorporate in their articles. Tannen expresses how women are labeled as powerless, meanwhile in Bennettjan's article she asserts about consent and how it has grown into our culture especially in college. Tannen's article is based more on how women are seen in our culture whereas Bennettjan's article focuses more on consent and how its seen. Deborah Tannen starts her article with her point of women being judged differently even if they do the same as men, “Women and men are judged differently even if they talk the same way. This tendency makes mischief in discussions of woman, man, and power. Is a linguistic strategy is used by a woman it is seen as powerless; if it is done by a man, it is seen as powerful.” Tannen's main idea is stated in the beginning of her article which is developed more and more through her paragraphs, of how women are understood and “seen as lower in status than the men's”. Meanwhile Bennettjan focuses more on the topic of consent. “ Mr.Kalin is a 24 year old founder of a group called Party With Consent a slogan displayed in neon behind him (on t-shirts he would later hand out). I find it advisable to comply to one of the norms of my culture which is to help out with my family members. In the Mexican culture it's common to help out any and all family members out even if they don't need it. I have complied to these norms ever since I was a little kid. For example if uncle was cutting pomegranates from his tree and I heard or seen that he was doing that I would have to go and help him and do it for him or just go and help him out it depends on my uncles decision to let me do it myself or just help him out since i'm a young male. Other times helping my family members could be a pain in the butt because they want you to do it their was and it gets annoying because we can't do anything about it or we'll get yelled at. But at the end of it it's a good norm to have as a young mexican
