In high schools, students are taught about the history of Canada and how the British and French established the country. The curriculum briefly touches upon the impact that Native Americans had on Canada. However, the Canadian Government does not illustrate the effects that Canadians had on the Native Americans. In Keeper’n Me, readers are shown the destructive results of alcohol and drugs on the lives of the Native American characters. This piece of literature also displays many undisclosed harmful effects Canadians had on their lives and culture. In addition to being highly educational, this book also allows readers to easily relate to the characters and situations they are going through. Therefore, Keeper’n Me by Richard Wagamese is a great book to study in high school.
Throughout the book, the author uses characters and situations to teach the detrimental consequences of drugs and alcohol. In the beginning of the book, Garnet Raven, befriends Lonnie Flowers, a drug dealer and through him, he becomes involved with drugs. However, he soon gets caught dealing cocaine by the police at a local club and is charged five years. Although this book is fictional, this type of event happens in real life. Criminals get caught and are punished and it is important for high school students to know this because it can change their lives.
