The Americans that supported the reconciliation and opposed independence with Great Britain in 1775 encouraged Paine to publish his “Common Sense” in 1776. Paine rebuttals the beliefs the colonists have for reconciliation by describing the relationship between Britain and the colonies, enforcing colonists to view the enduring devastations brought to America through British rule, and by providing the views of prosperity if the colonies had been independent. American colonists believed that the “parent” relationship between Great Britain and America has been and will continue to flourish. Paine views this statement to be absurd and gives an analogy stating that “if a child has thrived upon milk, that it is never to have meat” (Paine 85) to
