In the very beginning of chapter three, also known as CASSETTE 1: SIDE A, the voice of Hannah speaks through the tape. “Hello, boys and girls. Hannah Baker here. Live and in stereo . . . I’m about to tell you the story of my life. More specifically, why my life ended.” Right away, we have the sense that gives off the hint that the tapes hold a deep meaning towards Clay and even to us; the readers. The quote instantly tells us that Hannah ended her life and that she has reasons behind it, reasons that she’s about to explain.
“To my first kiss at the bottom of the slide. To now. First, you started a chain of events that ruined my life. Now, you were working on hers.” This quote that resides on page 123 is the key aspect as to why Hannah is no more among the living and how a certain boy’s action caused that as well as destroyed another girl’s life in the process. This is what fueled the fire more in Hannah’s eyes and what caused her to feel as if the world wasn’t making sense and being fair; she was hurt.
